Cookies, Cakes, & Cupcakes
Have you ever wanted to learn how to decorate sugar cookies with Royal Icing? How to create flower bouquets with cookies you have decorated with Royal Icing? How to create adorable animal faces on delicious cupcakes? How to make colorful fondant flowers and use them to decorate a cake? Susan will teach you how!
An experienced professional baker, pastry chef, and after-school workshop instructor, Susan has created fun workshops where children and adults work at their own work stations, using their own ingredients and supplies, and learn how to make beautiful cookies, adorable cupcakes, and pretty flowers. These workshops are designed to accommodate the novice chef, as well as the avid home baker who wants to learn new techniques.
Susan offers a relaxed, friendly teaching style that includes decorating and baking concepts, demonstrations, and full hands-on participation. In these workshops, all ingredients and supplies are included. Students complete their own projects from start to finish, and then take them home. Recipes, demonstration instructions, and project photos are provided.
WORKSHOP DETAILS:
LOCATION: The location of the workshop will be in your home. The location must be in the East Bay or Contra Costa County. The Classic Bakery in Walnut Creek can also host small groups.
AGE LIMIT: All children and adults are welcome. Children under the age of six MUST have a parent/guardian present during the workshop to work alongside their child.
MINIMUM GROUP SIZE: 6 STUDENTS
MAXIMUM GROUP SIZE: 16 STUDENTS
TIME: Each workshop lasts 90 minutes. Sometimes it will go longer when students want to finish their projects. Typically, each student will complete six cookies or six cupcakes or one fondant cake. More will be available to decorate, if time permits.
PRICE:
6-10 students: $60 per student
11-16 students: $50 per student
Workshop #1: Royal Icing Cookies
In this workshop, you will learn all the basics of decorating cookies using Royal Icing, including marbling, polka dots, hearts, and tie-dyes. You will learn to outline your cookies with Royal Icing, and then flood them, as well as many other tricks and techniques to make your cookies look flawless.
Choose the theme of your workshop, and we will bake buttery cookies in shapes that will work the best.
Some examples of Royal Icing cookies:
- Flowers (different sizes and shapes)
- Flower Bouquets (different flowers and leaves on sticks)
- Animals (dog, cat, mouse, fox, horse, farm animals, etc.)
- Transportation (race car, plane, train, pickup truck, etc.)
- Summer (ice cream cone, sea shell, starfish, sailboat, sun, etc.)
- Butterflies (different sizes and shapes)
- Valentine’s Day: (hearts, heart designs, and small flowers atop cookies)
Workshop #2: Cupcakes with Animal Faces
Cupcakes with Animal Faces
In this workshop, you will learn all the basics of decorating using buttercream frosting. Then we will focus on the perfect icing to decorate cupcakes, including which food coloring to use to get the truest colors.
You will learn how to pipe using different piping tips to create different textures, and how to use candies and nuts (if no one is allergic) to make cute animal faces. And you will take home all your beautiful cupcakes, too!

Workshop #3: Cupcakes with Flower & Leaf Decorations and Swirls
In this workshop, you will learn all the basics of decorating using buttercream frosting. Then we will focus on the perfect icing to decorate cupcakes, including which food coloring to use to get the truest colors.
You will learn how to pipe using different piping tips to create different petal and leaf designs, and how to use candy and sprinkles to finish decorating your flowers. And you will take home all your beautiful cupcakes, too!

Workshop #4: Fondant Flowers, Leaves & Butterflies
In this workshop, you will learn how to work with fondant to create beautiful and colorful flowers, leaves, and butterflies. You will learn how to use cookie cutters and fondant tools to make your flowers look real.
You will also learn how to roll out fondant, learn how to create marbled fondant, and then learn how to place the rolled-out fondant atop your own small cake. You will then use your creativity to place your flowers, leaves, and butterflies on top of your small cake.

Workshop #5: Using Fondant, Food Safe Stencils, and Edible Paint To Decorate Sugar Cookies
In this workshop, you will first learn how to roll out fondant and cut out fondant circles. Then you will learn how to paint the fondant circles using food safe stencils. The stencils come in all sorts of designs: Flowers, leaves, animals, geometric shapes and patterns, hearts, etc. The result is the creation of beautiful and colorful decorations on sugar cookies!
